Now, let's be honest. I have never played soccer and don't have a clue about the rules. So when I talk about pre-soccer. You have to understand my concept is very similar to that of a 3/4 year old.
When the kids play, it is typically 5 kids on one team, versus 5 kids on another team. There are no positions, such as goalie, striker, forward, it is just every child for themselves. The objective is learning to use your feet to kick the ball, to try and kick the ball in the goal, and to try and take it away from the opposite team.
When we have practice, we work on skills such as dribbling, reversing the path of the ball, going around cones, jumping over hurdles, basic skills. But, when it is game time, the rules are simple... Score a goal, take the ball away, don't touch the ball, and no tackling.
Morris gets more confident every game. We are not having the same drama we had in the spring of crying and tantrums. Is Morris David Beckham, um... NO! Have we seen improvement YES!
Morris enjoys going to practice and the game. He doesn't really understand the concept of "team" sports yet. He is happy to kick the ball and happy to let another child have a turn kicking the ball. For three years, we have drilled sharing into his mind. It is hard now in 6 months to try and teach him to take things away from other kids, ie., the ball. I know I am sending him mixed messages that his poor little brain can't comprehend... don't hit your brother at home when he takes your toy, but be aggressive and take the ball from the other team! Ugh, teaching your child is difficult. Where is the parenting manual I have been searching for?
Pre-soccer is a hoot. We laugh each week as the dads run up and down the field trying to instill some game skills into our boys. If you have never watched toddlers play soccer, you have missed a good belly laugh!
