5th Anniversary

Jared and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary on July 16th. We often giggle that it is only our fifth anniversary. We have been dating since I was 15 and Jared was 16. That is more like 13 years together. In our 13 years together we have experienced a few milestones... me turning 16, us both going off to Auburn, moving to Birmingham, having out first jobs, paying our own bills, both earning our masters, getting Louis, changing jobs, moving to Gadsden, and having Morris... just to name a few highlights... Every year seems to get better and is never dull. Even though we seem like old married people there is never a boring day at the Gladden house... We thought for our fifth anniversary it would be nice to take a trip together as a couple. We have not been on a couples trip since having Morris. After much debate and thought, we decided to travel to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. I should have known early on the trip would be iffy... Jared still can't say Punta Cana... he calls it Puna Canta... Even though Jared told people we were going to Puna Canta, we were off... All was going really well. The resort, Excellence, was super nice. The grounds were beautiful, our room was top class, the food was yummy, and the drinks were tasty. For two days, Jared and I had a wonderful time. On day three, the unthinkable happened. (If you have seen Sex and the City's first movie, think Charlotte and the pudding.) Jared and I were so careful what we ate. I am over the top about inspecting. All food must be cooked, only bottled water, don't even look at the fruit or veggies... well, Jared was not careful enough. On day three, he was sick; not just a little sick, but very sick. He could not get out of the bed. At 6am, he told me we were going to have to call a doctor. Yes, we went to the doctor in the Dominican Republic, that is how sick Jared was! After pedialite and some unnamed medicine, we went back to the room to decide: where do we go from here. After 3o minutes of thinking, we booked a flight home for the next day. On the fourth day, Jared was able to get out of the bed and make it to the airport. It was not pretty, but we arrived to Gadsden and Jared is now 14 pounds lighter than when we left the United States. We made it back home in time for our anniversary where Jared had flowers waiting on me and a doctors appointment lined up for him. Since returning home, we have decided we will never again travel to a third world country...

  1. I finally found your blog! My dad told me that y'all had one! Morris is just too cute! Congrats on your anniversary trip. We're thinking about going back to Mexico next year for our 5 year anniversary trip, but this makes me not want to go! I'm sorry it turned out not-so fun!
